Ferries to Messina (Sicily)

Caronte & Tourist ferries to Messina are the most convenient way to reach Sicily, with departures from Salerno and from Villa San Giovanni.

For over 50 years, Messina has been the Sicilian port of reference for ferrying on the Strait. Thanks to its particular geographic location, the city is the departure point for the rest of Italy and a point of arrival for reaching all the main Sicilian tourist destinations. The ships in our fleet are equipped with numerous onboard services, designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

Our ferry from Salerno allows our passengers to reach Messina, a convenient and safe alternative to the Salerno - Reggio Calabria motorway, to enjoy a truly relaxing holiday.

The Mediterranean gateway towards the East

A junction of numerous populations and the embarkation port for crusades, Messina still retains traces of its glorious past to this day. This is proven by the Church of Santa Maria Alemanna, constructed in 1220 by Emperor Frederick II, King of Sicily. With the form of a basilica having three naves, it is a rare example of Gothic art in the Mediterranean basin.

Working in Messina were artists of the calibre of Caravaggio, Montorsoli (student of Michelangelo and creator of Orion's Fountain, still present in Piazza Duomo) and Antonello da Messina born right in the city of the Strait.

Numerous popular traditions characterise the city, including the Procession of the "Vara": a 13.5-metre-high votive chariot with a weight of 8 tonnes, carried by hundreds of faithful hauling long ropes each 15th August.
