Services provided by Caronte & Tourist to promote the mobility of people with reduced mobility

Caronte & Tourist S.p.A. has always paid particular attention to the needs of disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility and has been equipped to allow them, in transit through their terminals and on board their own ships, to use the services in conditions equal to those of other passengers.

The assistance is free, it is carried out by Caronte & Tourist staff and consists in accompanying the PMR in all stages of transport, from the purchase of the ticket up to the landing, and during the stay in the terminal.

Requests for simple accompanying, that is to be made with or without a wheelchair, and the transport of luggage, can be made at the time of purchase of the ticket, and at least 24 hours before the departure of the ship.

Requests that include all other cases, including but not limited to, the transport of PMR that requires particular accommodation on board and / or the aid of medical equipment that are in its availability, must be carried out with a notice of at least 48 hours with respect to the scheduled departure, so that Caronte & Tourist has time to gear up to fulfill this particular request.

In relation to the characteristics of the specific request, Caronte & Tourist can also decide which naval unit should be used among those that carry out the transport service on the following day. Alternatively, assistance for embarkation and disembarkation operations can be requested by contacting the control tower at the following number: +39.0965.79.31.43, just before reaching the Messina or Villa San Giovanni embarkation area.

Embarkation and disembarkation operation

Upon request, the Reduced Mobility Person:

  • is assisted by the moment of access in the port area, whatever the access mode;
  • is accompanied by the Caronte & Tourist staff at the ticket office, for the purchase of the ticket, and at embarkation. The staff of Caronte & Tourist is also in charge of transporting baggage.The procedure includes the accompanying to the assigned seat on board and the delivery of the baggage to the crew. Moreover, it provides for the accompaniment to the hygienic services and to the refreshment points of the terminal;
  • is assisted on board ships (including the management of baggage by Caronte & Tourist personnel);
  • Is assisted in the unloading operation.

The unloading procedure includes the accompaniment carried out by Caronte & Tourist staff from the assigned place until leaving the port terminal. In addition, it includes the accompaniment to the terminal toilets. The staff of Caronte & Tourist is also in charge of transporting baggage.

Emergency

Should any emergency occur during the journey, the Reduced Mobility Person will be assigned a fixed person for routing to the meeting point.
