Where detective Inspector Montalbano investigates

Porto Empedocle, founded as the port area of the ancient Girgenti (today Agrigento), was the grain trading site for the entire surrounds from the 15th century.

In 1853, the village gained autonomy, becoming the capital of the decurionate capital under the name Molo di Girgenti (the wharf of Agrigento). In 1863, the village changed its name to Porto Empedocle in recognition of the renowned philosopher of Agrigento.

In 2003, the municipality decided to adopt Vigàta as its second denomination. The name is a tribute to the imaginary town of Inspector Montalbano, a literary character created by Andrea Camilleri. In 2009, a statue in Via Roma was dedicated to the writer, born and raised in Porto Empedocle.

However, the decision on the name was revoked in 2009. On 12th December of the same year, with the Decree of the President of the Republic, the city was conferred the title of Porto Empedocle.

Today, Porto Empedocle is one of the most important economic realities in the province of Agrigento. The festivities in honour of San Calogero - Calogerus the Anchorite - are not to be missed. Like Agrigento, Porto Empedocle also has an intense devotion to the Saint, celebrated with impressive processions, pyrotechnic displays and strong expressions of the faith of the local population.
