Salina was called Didyme (Twins) by the Greeks, due to the form of the two now-extinct volcanoes that can be seen when reaching the island.
In the early 1990s, Salina hosted set of the film "The Postman", inspired by the exile of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, played by Massimo Troisi and Philippe Noiret. Since then, the houses in which filming took place has become an annual pilgrimage destination for fans of the film, attracted by the tranquility of the location, the smells and colours of the broom plant, heather and caper flowers (the latter exported all over the world together with the malvasia grapes).
It is the ideal place for taking strolls and for trekking, its high slopes culminating with the Fossa delle Felci blazing with poppies, chestnuts and typical Mediterranean scrubs such as broom plant, myrtle and strawberry tree. In the lower-lying areas, the greenery is comprised of capers, barbary figs, orchards, olive groves and vineyards.
The Santuario della Madonna del Terzito is located in Valdichiesa. A place of devotion and prayer, the first chapel erected here was constructed in the 5th century, becoming a church in the 7th century and a sanctuary in the 17th century. Legend has it that after the death of a hermit - an eastern monk who, to escape persecution, had fled to the valley - a picture of the Madonna was found in the shrubs. In the place of this find, the first little church was built.
