The "black giant" in the land of God

From the sea at sunset, aboard our ferries, "the black giant" of Stromboli stands silhouetted between the intense blue of the sea and the crimson of the sky.

The part emerging from the island of Stromboli is virtually a pinhead compared to the huge volcanic structure that plunges down into the Tyrrhenian Sea, a platform estimated to be 25 times bigger than the emerged part.

For the ancient peoples of the sea, Stromboli was the "Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea". The continuous flashes emanating from the eruptions of the volcano provided those navigating in the vicinity with the exact location on the route connecting the Mediterranean to the lower Tyrrhenian.

After 2000 years, Stromboli is volcano that is still active to this day. With uninterrupted activity and a cadence of 3-7 explosions per hour, Stromboli eruptions reach a height ranging from 100 to 200 metres.

The volcanic material rolls down to the Sciara del Fuoco, a lava flow that disperses into the sea with an incredible display of magma, water and steam.

Director Roberto Rossellini chose the island for shooting his film, "Stromboli", starring his companion, Ingrid Bergman.

Il Pertuso
Located in Ginostra in the southwestern part of the island, Il Pertuso (The Hole) was - until a few years ago - the smallest port in the world. Expanded in 2004, the old port still retains its original beauty today.
